Occupied Palestine, in perspective

About this map

This site shows the scale of Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territory it captured in 1967: the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. It does this by laying the same share of land over a country you know.

How the comparison works

Areas are measured on the Earth's surface. For the chosen country, we grow a compact group of states or provinces that share land borders, until it covers about the same share of the country as the Palestinian area being compared. A single connected area matters more than an exact match, so the share we show is the share we actually selected. Countries where no connected group comes within 8 points of the target aren't listed.

The red regions are an illustration, not a forecast. Land area can't measure lives, displacement, or what a place means to the people who live there.

What the shapes are, and aren't

East Jerusalem is part of the occupied West Bank. Israel's annexation of it isn't recognized by the UN Security Council (Resolution 478). The UN and the International Court of Justice treat the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza as a single occupied territory.
